Robert Smith

Bob Smith in his studioBorn in Sydney in 1942, Bob grew up in post-war suburban Summer Hill.

After a technical education Bob left school at 15 and landed his first job as a junior in a commercial art studio - cleaning brushes and changing the water jars - whilst studying fine art part-time at the National Art School in East Sydney.

After settling and starting a family in tropical Cooktown in the mid-seventies, the remarkable landscapes of Cape York inspired Bob to resume painting. This passion has continued unabated for almost forty years and currently finds inspiration in Tasmania's rugged, wind-swept landscapes and seascapes - Bob's home since 2005.

Over the course of his career, Bob's work has featured in over twenty group and solo exhibitions and has won awards and critical acclaim at regional Art Prizes in Queensland, Tasmania and NSW, including:
- The Heritage Prize at the Pine Rivers Art Awards in Queensland (1998)
- The Cradle Coast Pastel Award in Tasmania (2007)
- Finalist in the Mortimer Prize in Dubbo, NSW (2008 and 2009)
